Self-doubt is a feeling shared by all humans at different levels and only a small portion manage to overcome it or handle it in a healthy manner.
As we grow older, we experience situations that make us doubt ourselves and our capabilities to realize our dreams.
Failure can cause even a successful self-confident person to doubt his or her abilities and skills.
If you follow professional athletes or team sports players, for example, you will notice that some of them experience phases of shakiness and insecurity that can be observed clearly in their performance and even through their facial expressions.
Nevertheless, they still show up in training sessions. They overcome those doubts by just going out there and playing again and again until they regain their complete self-confidence.
What is Self-doubt?
Self-doubt is generally associated with negative connotations, so let us first try to understand it. Doubt is a mental state in which the mind can not choose between two or more contradictory opinions or ideas.
According to etymologists, the word “doubt” comes from the word “dvau” in the Sanskrit language, which means two. In the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the word “self-doubt” is defined as a feeling of doubt about one’s abilities or actions.
In simple terms, self-doubt is the gap between what you want to achieve and what you think you can achieve.
How to Overcome Self-doubt?
I am pretty sure that you do not have the exact same opinions or habits you had 5 years ago. That is because your perception change consistently.
Nevertheless, certain ideas become part of your belief system and by that block you from growing emotionally and intellectually. Therefore, constructive self-doubt can be considered as a way to keep yourself in check and an invitation to re-examine your environment, goals in life, habits, etc.
On the other hand, destructive self-doubt is difficult to overcome, unless you initiate a massive shift in your thinking patterns.
So how can you overcome self-doubt?
Accept Your Mistakes And Failures
Life is hard for everyone and you are no different.
Anyone you see has definitely made a stupid decision at a certain point or maybe a series of stupid decisions one after another and for many years without even noticing.
You might have done the same.
There is no benefit in dwelling about the past’s mistakes or failures no matter how massive they were.
By doing that, you will only waste your today and tomorrow.
When you appreciate what you have or have already achieved, you boost your self-confidence and overcome your feelings of self-doubt.
This way of looking at things in your life should become a habit to maximize the positive effect it could bring.
Do Not Compare Yourself To Others
Do not compare yourself to anyone, not even to yourself in the past.
Every person is traveling on a certain different path.
When you envy another person, you only envy what is to be seen on the outside.
You do not know how this person is actually feeling or whether he or she is actually satisfied with what he or she has achieved.
Furthermore, you do not know the number of sacrifices or the efforts this person had to make in order to reach where he or she is at the moment.
You basically have neither the right nor any benefit in doing so.
Instead, you should focus on your own game and on the place you want to reach.
By doing so, you won’t need to overcome self-doubt because you won’t experience it in the first place.
Do Not Rush
So, you have goals and you are working hard to achieve them, but you are still failing?
The key to success is patience and consistency.
It takes a lot of time and dedication to create something of value or to master a certain skill.
Yes, there are outliers who are born with special gifts. Or others that have a tremendous amount of luck that puts them in the right time, right place and under the right circumstances.
But that is not the case for the majority of successful people who worked day and night on their craft or projects until they succeeded.
If you want to be successful in life, then you have to travel down this road too and actually enjoy this painful demanding journey.
Defend Your Mental State
Occasionally, you will meet someone who disrespect you or hurt you with a look or a word. The best way to deal with such people is to spit on their faces.
No, I was just kidding.
You have to ignore them because you defend your mental state with a solid shield of self-love and you forgive other’s emotional and behavioral instability.
Again, you won’t need to overcome self-doubt, if you do this because you won’t experience it in the first place.
On the other hand, you should welcome constructive criticism and actually look for it in order to improve yourself, your skills or any project you are working on.
Without the input of others, even if negative, you won’t be able to discover your weaknesses. Therefore, you should consider constructive criticism as an essential part of your growth process.
Believe In A Synchronous Universe
Everything that happens to you has a cause and does not take place by mere coincidence.
The planets and the stars spin in a synchronous manner.
Your body systems, organs, and cells behave in a synchronous manner.
So why wouldn’t your life events also take place in a synchronous manner?
You have to believe in a bigger plan and consider every situation you experience as a part of your journey towards your goals.
Because those dreams and goals exist in your mind for a reason too.
If you hear a voice within you saying you cannot paint, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.
Vincent Willem van Gogh
You can overcome destructive self-doubt by following the rules mentioned above.
Remember that constructive self-doubt and criticism are necessary for your growth.
Furthermore, you should observe your thoughts and try to understand why your mind is thinking in a certain manner. Let the doubt and the uncertainty push you towards unclaimed territories and untapped resources.
